Birmingham City Council has sustained the second biggest total of job losses during the last financial period by any local authority. The council has recently got rid of 5,000 employees according to the GMB union. A Local Government Employers representative said of the latest round of cuts: "These cuts are effective from April 1, and as there is a statutory obligation to consult on any redundancies over a 90-day period, councils are left with no choice but to start making tough decisions now.”
