Reshoring production could create up to 35,000 new jobs across the West Midlands

Up to 35,000 jobs could be created across the West Midlands should local companies decide to re-shore more of their production capabilities, a recent report by EY was able to reveal.

Titled “The Re-shoring – Time to seize the opportunity”, the report suggests that reshoring could generate £1.7bn in GDP for the East Midlands’ economy, as well as £15.3bn in GDP and 315,000 jobs nationally.

Sarah Fowler, EY’s senior partner in the Midlands, commented on the report’s findings: "The economics underpinning the reshoring trend appear to be reversing and presents the region with a once-in-a-generation opportunity.

"While increasing wages in developing countries are eroding their labour cost advantage, there are many more factors driving business to choose British shores. The desire to guarantee quality and the imperative to reduce time to market are increasingly important drivers of location decisions."
