Thousands of jobs to be created as part of Lincolnshire shopping park redevelopment
Thousands of job could be created in Lincolnshire under plans to level an existing shopping park on the banks of the River Witham and replace it with a new development comprising, shops, restaurants, bars, homes, student accommodation and a hotel.
The scheme submitted to the City of Lincoln Council suggests that a number of existing buildings will be demolished to make way for almost 355,000 sq ft of retail space, 82,500 sq ft for restaurant and bar use and up to 150 homes.
A maximum of 1,100 student accommodation units could be developed at the site, as well as a 130-room hotel and a multi-storey car park with 1,100 spaces. Provision has also been made for a potential cinema.
Most of the existing units in St Marks Shopping Centre will be retained, including the shop behind the listed façade of the former station and the units leading from Debenhams to the high street.
A planning statement prepared by Montagu Evans on behalf of Standard Life said a retail-led mixed-use development has been an "aspiration" of Lincoln council since the publication of its draft masterplan in 2012.
If approved, the revamped St Marks could create between 1,770 and 2,370 jobs.
"The application proposes a new, high quality development to complement the existing city centre provision," the statement added.
"It proposes high quality public realm with active uses focussed around the river to integrate two currently separate sites. The redevelopment will place pedestrians, rather than cars, as the focus of St Marks."
