Plans approved for £50m town centre project

Plans for a new headquarters for Warwick District Council, 170 homes and a 620-space car park in Leamington town centre have been given the green light, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

Up to 170 new homes, across a group of buildings ranging between 2.5 and six storeys high, will be built on the current site of the council’s headquarters on Milverton Hill and the sale of the land will fund the authority’s new 28,901 sq ft base.

The move from Riverside House to the town centre will save the authority more than £300,000 a year in running costs.

About 350 jobs are now set to be moved the new headquarters, bringing an additional £1m in spending to the town centre. The two schemes could create an estimated 250 jobs during construction.

Council leader, Cllr Andrew Mobbs, said: "We are very pleased with the decision to approve the plans which will deliver a major economic boost to Leamington and the wider district.

"Covent Garden has long been in need of major investment and this scheme will create a landmark development fitting to this key Leamington town centre location.

"The new development will support local businesses by providing a state of the art car-park with greater capacity, cycle storage and electric vehicle charging points, much needed town centre housing and smaller, more efficient and more accessible offices for the Council and our customers.

"This has never been about politics it has been about economic common sense and regeneration.
