New £300,000 apprenticeship hub launches in Shrewsbury

A new £300,000 training academy has been launched in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, as part of an initiative to develop and support the next generation of manufacturing professionals, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The In-Comm Training & Business Services partnered with metal pressing and assembly business Salop Design & Engineering Ltd to create the 10,000 sq ft facility on Brixton Way.

The hub is known as In-Comm Training Academy Shrewsbury (ITAS) and includes a CAD training room, welding bays and surface grinders. Its construction took two months to complete.

ITAS will initially provide 60 spaces for 16 to 24-year-olds seeking intermediate, advance and higher apprenticeships. Plans are in place to increase the number to 100 by 2018.

The centre is also exploring apprenticeships for the administration, customer service and business management sectors.

"Shropshire is crying out for more dedicated industry-led provision in order to support its resurgent manufacturing base – we’re hoping our academy will start to address this skills gap," said Gareth Jones, managing director of In-Comm.

"We knew we wanted to establish a presence in Shropshire and the management at Salop said they would be happy to dedicate some space inside their factory to make it happen.”
