Shared workplace provider WeWork moves into Birmingham
The shared workplace provider WeWork has agreed to let office space at 55 Colmore Row in Birmingham.
This deal is WeWork’s first premises in Birmingham, and fills the last of 55 Colmore Row’s vacant offices.
The building dates back to 1878 and was redeveloped in 2015, at a cost of £30m. This involved adding an additional storey, and refurbished the listed banking hall for use as a reception area.
Other companies which are using the building include the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, Savills and Pinsent Masons, and the restaurant spaces are taken up by Gaucho and Fazenda.
Luke Duckworth, portfolio manager at Nuveen Real Estate, which owns the building said: "WeWork is the most exciting brand in the co-working sector.
"They have made no secret of their ambitions to get a foothold in Birmingham and we’re thrilled to have secured them at 55 Colmore Row."
Mathieu Proust, general manager WeWork UK and Ireland, added: "I’m pleased to announce our expansion to Birmingham, the fifth city for WeWork in the UK.
"We’ve recently welcomed our 100,000th member to WeWork in EMEA, and I’m excited to be continuing to grow our presence in the UK – our second largest market worldwide – where we’re home to a flourishing community of over 45,000 members."

A new shared working space is a great thing for any urban area, so it is fantastic that Birmingham is now home to WeWork. However, there are boring elements to using this kind of space which need to be addressed or businesses will run into problems!
Co-working spaces are usually associated with freelancers and the self-employed, but they can also be lifesavers for remote workers. Working from home just doesn’t suit everyone, as it blurs the boundaries between work-time and home-time to a degree that some people find unhelpful.
A unique city-centre co-working space like this would definitely be perfect for remote workers to create that distance between their home-selves and their work-selves, and so become more productive and satisfied.
Our Self-Service Module (SSM) enables employees to clock themselves in and out from an internet browser or a mobile app, as well as allowing them to request holidays and register doctor appointments.
Most importantly for sceptical business owners, if employees use the mobile phone app version of this module, their movements can be tracked through GPS and plotted onto a map.
